Quadratic Extended-Duty-Ratio Boost Converter with Voltage Multiplier Cell for High Gain Applications

Quadratic extended-duty-ratio (Q-EDR) boost converter is a recent topology derived from conventional quadratic boost and an EDR DC-DC converter. The gain of Q-EDR converter depends on the number of phases involved in the EDR stage, which has a switch in each of its phase. In this paper the output stage of Q-EDR is interfaced with a voltage multiplier cell (VMC) comprising of only diode and capacitor which increases the gain further without requiring any additional switch. This reduces the number of phases in EDR stage while retaining the merits of EDR and quadratic converter as in the prior case. Converter operation for the proposed topology is verified using a hardware prototype operating at 24 V- 36 V input to 600 V output rated for 600 W. Experimental results showing ultra high voltage gain of 25 at a moderate duty close to 0.6 are presented with a 2-phase Q-EDR with two VMC stages. The converter is able to achieve a peak efficiency of 95.7% while the switch voltage stress is limited to 150 V for 600 V output.
