Chapter Abstract:
Cellular network technologies have been used for both commercial mobile phone and data networks as well as private mobile radio networks used by the military, police, and firefighters. Cellular network design must solve many problems, which simply do not exist for fixed networks, to support terminal mobility. This chapter talks about cellular systems which provide the reader with an overview of such problems and related solutions. Frequency Division Multiple Access‐based cellular systems, such as Nordic Mobile Telephone and Global System for Mobile, divide the whole frequency range of the network to a number of narrow radio channels to be allocated for cells. In code division multiple access networks, the cells can use the same frequency bands, as different transmissions are distinguished with code words rather than frequencies. The new global 4G LTE technology supported only packet switched data connections, but not the traditional circuit switched telephony.
