Method of counter states encoding for passing the state jumps between asynchronous clock domains

The direct transmission of counter state between asynchronous clock domains in digital circuits requires a special coding of the states to protect the transmitted data from corruption, caused by asynchronous sampling of the multi-bit toggling value. The conventional Gray code is a known example of the code, allowing to transmit safely only adj acent state transitions. The proposed coding method allows to transmit safely any counter state jumps, limited by arbitrary predefined parameter. The potential application of the method is encoding of read- and write-pointers in asynchronous FIFOs with variable write-and/or read data sizes.
