Investigation on Residual Stress of large SiC reinforced Aluminium Matrix Composite Forging

SiC reinforced aluminium composites (AMC) attract much attention in the aircraft and vehicle industries. Residual stress is generated due to the intrinsic difference of expansion coefficients between reinforcements and matrix, and the inconsistency of internal and external deformation, especially for large forgings. In this work, residual stress of a rabbit ear like AMC forging released by vibration aging was investigated by both simulation and experimental approaches. In the simulation, the excitation frequency, loading positions, and excitation force parameters were optimized by introducing residual stress from quenching and excitation loading at two different positions. The experiments of vibration aging show that residual surface stress components of S11 S33 in plane release from 42.8% to 78.7%, from 48.2% to 75.4%, respectively.
