Robust MTPA based IPMSM Drive with Reduced Sensor for EV Application

This paper aims at the design and development of a cost-effective interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive, especially for Electric Vehicle applications. To reduce overall current sensor count in popular front-end interleaved dc-dc converter-based double stage inverter, double branch sampling using an isolated single current sensor to reconstruct three-phase currents of motor and single branch current sampling from the dc-link current sensor to reconstruct interleaved inductor currents are adopted. To reduce the tradeoff between cost-effectiveness and performance of the drive, maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control is simplified with a robust simplex optimization algorithm with the proposed reduced current sensor topology. The proposed control structure and topology are proved to be extremely reliable and cost-effective, which is verified by simulation results.
