Carpooling phenomena in Tunisia: General characteristics and gender users behavior analysis

Gender is often cited as an important determinant of travel behavior. The changing role of women in society in recent decades raises the question of whether differences in mobility play a key role. Human mobility is undergoing an evolution towards a greener mode based on vehicle sharing and travel between two or more people in urban and suburban areas. Our research examines the gender differences in carpooling and the main determinants of this daily practice in Tunisia. In its current form, this paper addresses the phenomenon of carpooling among Tunisians. We study user behavior by referring to their travel patterns and transportation habits to identify the individuals exhibiting this behavior. The data collection method for our study is a web-based survey. A total of 1082 responses were compiled using this method, highlighting the characteristics of men's and women's travel on Tunisian territory. Our main results demonstrate the importance of age, marital status, and socio-occupational category in determining female ridesharing profiles. Almost four in five female carpoolers are under the age of 30, compared to less than 50 percent of men, and only one in four men are married, compared to 30 percent of women.
