Cell Selection Based on Chemistry and Key Parameters for Electric Vehicle

Automotive sectors are shifting towards electric vehicles (EVs) from internal combustion technology for a pollution free environment. Li ion batteries are widely used in EVs due to their high energy density compared to other commercially available energy storage devices. In order to select the batteries for electric vehicle application, we need to understand the automotive energy system's requirements. The selection of battery is always a trade-off among energy density, power density, safety, lifetime expectation and other performances in combination with the material cost. Here, we review these requirements with respect to both cell chemistry and physical design of batteries. Safety, durability and economy are some of the major concerns to be addressed during cell selection. The requirements mentioned in this review article will help to choose the most suitable cell design (chemical and physical) for automotive applications.
