Serverless Computing for the Cloud‐Native Era

This chapter discusses the key motivations for serverless computing, the serverless implications and the evolution of serverless computing. It focuses on serverless computing and how it is simplifying and speeding up cloud‐native application development, deployment, and delivery. The wider adoption of microservices architecture for building and deploying enterprise‐scale, service‐oriented, and event‐driven applications has clearly invigorated the movement toward cloud‐native computing. Serverless refers to the concept that developers of serverless applications no longer need to spend time and resources on server provisioning, maintenance, updates, scaling, and capacity planning. The concepts of serverless architecture and Function‐as‐a‐service have grown hand‐in‐hand with the popularity of containers and on‐demand cloud offerings. The identified drawbacks of the serverless idea will be overcome through competent technological solutions. Serverless computing is well positioned to play a critical role in the enterprise.
