An Automatic Headlamp Leveling System Based on the Vehicle Acceleration Information

In this paper, a headlamp Automatic Leveling System (ALS) based on the vehicle acceleration is proposed. As a new adaptive headlamp leveling technology, this system can provide a safer driving experience at night. The ALS system receives real-time vehicle acceleration information through CAN bus. The MCU calculates the illumination pitch angle of the headlamp according to the vehicle acceleration and control the stepper motor through LIN bus to realize dynamic adjustment of the headlamp. The relationship between the headlamp pitch angle and vehicle acceleration is established from the Adams/Car modeling and simulation. The actual vehicle acceleration data is used to test the ALS system. A filtering process for the acceleration data is introduced to avoid unexpected adjustment of the headlamp. By mapping from the vehicle acceleration to the adjusting angle of the motor in headlamp, the illumination distance of the vehicle can be adjusted dynamically when driving. This ALS system can be further used in the automotive industry to improve the safety when driving at night.
