Magnetic Shielding for Electric Car Power Cables

In this article, the effect of different magnetic shielding materials for electric car power cables has been studied using finite element analysis (FEA), verified by experimental results. Bearing in mind the complex spectrum modulation, typically using pulsewidth modulation (PWM), a magnetic field shielding up to 2 kHz is required. Therefore, magnetic shielding was studied for frequencies of 2 kHz, 50 Hz, and dc field. The employed magnetic shielding materials were high permeability layers, such as permalloy, as well as composites based on resin matrix including flakes or powders from nanocrystalline ribbons, such as nanocrystalline FINAMET ribbons. Magnetic shielding was studied for cable illustrating good shielding ability using a combination of Cu and permalloy sheets for frequencies up to 2 kHz. Furthermore, magnetic shielding was studied for the case of floor shielding, where permalloy appeared to be an acceptable shielding solution.
