Analysis of NFPA 70E, Table 130(C)(15)(a) Using IEEE 1584–2018 Constant Energy Boundaries: ESW 2022–06

This paper presents an analysis of Table 130(C)(15)(a), Arc Flash PPE Categories for Alternating Current (ac) Systems, in the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E®) as compared to using IEEE Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations (IEEE 1584). This NFPA 70E table is one method for electrical workers to assess the potential severity component of arc-flash risk analysis in the United States and select suitable PPE. IEEE 1584 is the other main method used in North America to assess the severity component of an arc flash risk analysis for the purpose of selecting arc rated PPE. The same table in NFPA 70E is found in the equivalent Canadian standard for electrical safety, CSA Z462.
