Simulation of an Energy Management Test Bench for Hybrid Storage System Extensions to a Wind Energy Plant

To combine the advantages of different storage technologies, hybrid storage systems can be used. Next to the classical technologies, like super capacitors and battery systems (mostly lithium-ion today), the production and/or re-electrification of hydrogen has become an important topic. With each type of storage, the management of the existing energy budget becomes more complex, as their specific properties have to be considered when optimizing the distribution. To support the iterative design process of this energy management, models of all the involved components have to be designed to be detailed enough to cover the main behavior, but still perform well enough to iterate at a meaningful rate when included into one comprehensive model. This comprehensive model ideally offers an easy way to introduce the higher order control strategy and change parameters without having to look into the models of the different plants themselves. This is why the combination of these plants can be interpreted as a virtual test bench: Different control and management strategies can be inserted in a separate module and can be tested under the same conditions as their competing or previous versions.
