Hybrid J-Type Darrieus and Savonius Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Capable of Harvesting Roadside Wind Energy

The project is centered on designing a roadside hybrid vertical axis wind turbine system capable of harvesting wind energy produced by the air drag of passing vehicles and the ambient wind, which would power the hybrid VAWT system and charge batteries. The study aimed to maximize the turbine’s efficiency by incorporating J-Type Darrieus VAWT and S-Type Savonius VAWT blades into a hybrid VAWT blade design. The prototype was tested on the North Luzon Expressway. Wind speed was measured using a handheld anemometer. No load voltage, full load voltage, current, output power, and temperature were measured using different measuring and sensing devices and were recorded in the datalogger and stored in a 32GB microSD memory card. The measured values were transmitted to the cloud with Arduino Integrated Development Environment and Visual Studio Code. The data are visualized on the Graphical User Interface of the dedicated server for monitoring and evaluating the performance of the hybrid VAWT. After testing the prototype from morning to evening on the NLEX, the hybrid VAWT could charge the battery from 62.63 to 70.53 percent capacity. The prototype testing revealed that a minimum wind speed of 2 m/s is required for the hybrid VAWT to begin rotating. The results were evaluated using graphs and curves.
