Distributed Generation in 1900?: How the Edison Co. of New York Met Short-Term Needs [History]

Distributed Generation (DG) has become a topic of major focus in the planning of electric generation, transmission, and distribution for more than two decades as deregulation ended 120 years of vertically integrated companies that controlled all three functions. Today’s DG generally involves renewable resources, such as solar, wind, and small-scale hydro, along with methods for integrating them into larger systems. DG may connect directly or through microgrids in a limited territory, which then may or may not connect with larger systems. The power produced may be injected into the system and used as a means to adjust power flow where needed.
