Formal Analysis of SMAP Fog/Edge Protocol Using AVISPA

This paper contains a formal analysis of the authentication protocol by Pardeshi and Yuan, SMAP Fog/Edge using the AVISPA analysis tool. The analysis was performed using two backends, OFMC and CL-AtSE. The result obtained on OFMC are “SAFE” but the result on CL-AtSE are “UNSAFE”. Verification of SMAP Fog/Edge protocol was carried out using the CL-AtSE and OFMC back-ends on AVISPA. Based on the analysis, the results provided by CL-AtSe back-end was found that the SMAP Fog/Edge protocol is vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. The attack was successful because there was no authentication scheme between the client and the authentication server.
