Research on Site Selection and Capacity of FACTS Devices in Power System

The Flexible Alternative Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) device can improve the transmission capacity of the system, reduce the network loss, enhance the voltage stability, and optimize the operation mode of the system. Focusing on Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) and Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), firstly, the steady-state power injection model of UPFC is established, the active power flow performance index (PI) is defined, and the UPFC installation position is determined according to the sensitivity coefficient of UPFC control parameters to the influence of PI; Then, the modal analysis method is used to determine the vulnerable area of the system voltage and the installation position of the STATCOM is determined according to the bus participation factor. Finally, a power flow optimization model with minimum system active power loss, minimum voltage offset, and maximum transmission capacity is established. The multi-objective function is normalized by the fuzzy membership function and converted into a single-objective function, and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to optimize the solution. Taking IEEE14 as an example, the calculation results show that the proposed model and algorithm can quickly and effectively determine the installation location and capacity of UFPC and STATCOM, which provides a reference for other FACTS installations.
