Maximal Renewable Power Penetration Computation with Augmented Lagrangian Alternative Direction Inexact Newton Method

Global warming and environmental pollution concerns have promoted dramatic penetration of renewable energy sources all over the world. The problem of estimating the maximal power penetration of renewable energy can be formulated as an optimal power flow problem. In this paper, we apply augmented Lagrangian alternating direction inexact Newton (ALADIN) method to solve this optimization problem. The ALADIN method uses inexact Hessians which can reduce the communication compared with alternating direction of multipliers method (ADMM). The numerical studies on 30 bus system indicating that the ALADIN method is much faster than the ADMM and can reduce the number of iterations by about one order of magnitude.
