Impact of Group Technology in Manufacturing Industry-State-of-art

Improving Productivity is the major challenge for any manufacturing industry in todays market, Production requires various resources like machinery and computer assistance for speed productivity and even some adopting some complex procedures is required to meet the demand. and parts has to be moved from one place to another which leads to machine idle time and poor utilization of man power. Because of this more set up changes and frequent part movement occurs and leads to poor productivity, so to avoid this group technology is used, it simplifies the design and reduce the tool and equipment cost. In this review identifying the part family through production flow analysis(PFA) which uses matrix of part and machine numbers to group families .Group technology(GT) principles are implemented in cellular manufacturing field to obtain major change in production output. Computers in manufacturing systems and group technology help to reduce setup time, inventory levels, and transportation of items, as well as provide effective production control. By forming product and machine groups and streamlining material flows, mass customization can be conducted in the shop floor in order to meet client requirements at a reasonable cost and on time, and PFA has a key role in converting mass production company to mass customization system. Important aspects of lean manufacturing such as production waste, setup time, quality, and inventory management are all influenced by group technology, so to avoid this issues few conceptual and dimension models are proposed in the past to enhance the productivity through GT in lean production systems.
