Validation of EMT Type-4 User Defined Wind Turbine Model According to ERCOT Unit Test Requirements

Maintaining power system stability is crucial to increase the Inverter Based Resources (IBR) technology in the generating resource mix. With rapidly increasing penetration of wind resources on the electric grid, model robustness and accuracy are critically important for ensuring the stability of the grid. The high level of complexity and performance in wind turbine and plant level controls has the potential to cause grid instability if those controls are not properly parameterized to meet regional grid code requirements. In order to integrate wind power plants into the grid with a high level of stability, accurate modelling and study work is essential. This paper discusses requirements set forth by ERCOT, in the USA, as a method to increase model accuracy and stability within the region as well as detailing the process proposed by Vestas to meet these requirements and ensure the Vestas Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) user defined models are as accurate as possible.
