Research on an Absoption-phase Cancellation Checkerboard Metasurface for RCS reduction

This paper designs a single-layer absorbing metasurface with 20dB RCS reduction by using the absorption-phase cancellation. The metasurface consists of two types of ultra-thin absorbing units with absorption properties greater than 10dB which have different reflection phases. The 20dB RCS reduction conditions of the two units are analyzed in term of considering absorption and phase cancellation. According to the above analysis, two types of metasurface units with absorbing performance and different reflection phases are designed to achieve RCS reduction. Simulation experiments show that the metasurface can achieve 20dB RCS reduction at 6-12.8GHz while the 10dB RCS reduction is 4.8-15.4GHz. The designed metasurface can increase the reduction to 20dB while maintaining the original bandwidth of 10dB, which has great potential in practical application.
