Control of Parallel Inverters for Electric Powered Shipboard Microgrid

The growing demand for energy conservation and greenhouse emissions reduction has shifted the focus toward integrating renewable energy sources (RES) in the marine industry. These efforts have led to more complexity in the shipboard power system. Hence, an exact evaluation of the system is required, and thus detailed modeling and simulation are carried out to facilitate the analysis and optimization of the system. This paper introduces a standalone electric system with a common 415V-AC bus powered by a photovoltaic (PV) system. Due to the irregular availability of RES, incorporating the energy storage system (ESS) is needed. It is also required to mitigate the power fluctuations and to improve the system’s efficiency and reliability. The power converters are also modeled and controlled so that there is a minimal loss of power. The reweighted zero-attracting lncosh (RZA-lncosh) algorithm is adopted for the voltage source converter (VSC) to provide high steady-state performance. The half-bridge bidirectional converter (BDC) is utilized to regulate the DC link voltage of the battery-VSC. The system is tested in a MATLAB environment under different operating conditions.
