Silicon-germanium photodetectors for energy-aware chip-scale communications

We report on recent advances in silicon-germanium-silicon photodetectors with lateral p-i-n hetero-junctions. They are fast, sensitive and consume only a few fJ/bit. Such optical photodetectors hold much promises for future on-chip communications.
