ENFW: an Industrial Firewall for Edge Computing

The introduction of edge computing has brought more network security risks. Although the industrial firewall can be used as an effective means to solve cyber threats, there has been a lack of an industrial firewall system suitable for the edge layer of the industrial edge computing framework, which can parse multiple network protocols. Based on the security problems of the edge network, an industrial firewall system called ‘ENFW’ (edge node firewall) is designed, which is highly adaptable to the characteristics of edge computing and can be deployed on a variety of edge nodes. Furthermore, an edge industrial firewall micro-service is proposed to parse and control heterogeneous industrial network protocols and ensure the security of industrial device access. The experiment demonstrated that multiple network protocols are successfully parsed and filtered by the ENFW and ENFW outperforms traditional firewall in terms of performance. The availability and effectiveness of ENFW are verified.
