optimization of Cable Tray Support in Oil & Gas Projects Using Heavy Duty Expansion Plates

This paper presents a case study to qualify the installation of cable tray systems in Oil& Gas projects with nonstandard expansion splicing plates. It aims to reduce cost and installation time of local power distribution networks. In this case study, engineering requirements mandate two supports per expansion joint, but heavy duty expansion plates (HDEP) are proposed to deploy a single support solution. To verify the feasibility of HDEP for large scale systems, the optimum location for HDEP support was analyzed using STAAD.Pro Software to simulate system rigidity based on thermal expansion, load and deflection requirements. The results show that placing the single support of HDEP at the quarter point of the span length (e.g. 2m for 8m cable tray) is better than locating the support within 600 mm from the expansion joint by 32% for the deflection and 9% for the utilization ratio. The study findings were demonstrated and confirmed through experimental tests according to international standards. Hence, the HDEP solution was approved and implemented in a new gas plant. It is estimated that HDEP eliminated 6,274 structural steel supports, which led to material and man-hour cost savings. The study outcomes pave the way for further amendments in engineering requirements of hydrocarbon facilities to standardize HDEP fittings for cable tray systems.
