Testing and Evaluation of Standards for Performance and Safety of Induction Motors

The nameplate of induction motor enables installers, operators, and maintenance personnel to understand and recognize the type of motor and its requirements quickly and easily. The nameplate specifies the basic mechanical design, electrical performance, and dimensional parameters of the motor. In this study, the aim is to test and evaluate single - and three-phase induction motors to see if the information on their nameplate is correct by comparing test results and nameplate information. Induction motors from the same manufacturer were tested in 2019 and 2020. The paper demonstrates the performance of the tested induction motors. The motors’ defects are highlighted through experiments carried out at the Explosion Prevention Technology and Rotating Machines (EPT&RM) laboratory of SABS (South African Bureau of Standards), which is accredited by SANAS (South African National Accreditation System). The tests and evaluations were carried out in accordance with both the South African National Standard (SANS 1804) and International Standards (IEC 60034 series) of which a high percentage (41%) noncompliance rate of the three-phase motor variants has been reported.
