Economic and environmental evaluation of landfill gas to energy technology for Lesotho selected cities

This study examined the economic viability and environmental benefits of implementing Landfill gas to energy (LFGTE) technology in selected districts of Lesotho. The economic assessment was performed using net present value (NPV), levelised cost of energy (LCOE), and total life cycle cost (TLCC), while the environmental impact was evaluated using the life cycle assessment (LCA) technique. The key finding was that over 25-years (2020-2045), the methane yield is 47630296 – 134963406 cubic meters. Moreover, the electricity generation ranges from 119 – 315MWh/year. Economically, the results demonstrated that LFGTE technology is feasible, as evidenced by their positive NPV of 218081 US dollars and the LCOE of 0.221 USD/kWh. In terms of environmental benefits, the results show that LFGTE can reduce global warming potential by 79%. This paper aims to provide the government and investors with reliable information to make informed decisions regarding the costs, performance, and global impact of waste-to-energy technology.
