Evaluation of Active Implantable Medical Device RF-Induced Heating in the Vicinity of an Orthopedic Plate during MRI

This paper evaluates the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiofrequency (RF)-induced heating, in terms of Ig-averaged specific absorption rate (SAR), of an active implantable medical device (AIMD) when it is placed near an orthopedic plate device at 10 different configurations. The SAR values of the AIMD are evaluated with the transfer function approach and direct numerical simulations. It shows that the results obtained by the transfer function method are in good agreement with those obtained by direct simulations. This indicates that the transfer function method is still a valid approach for RF-induced heating evaluation in the presence of nearby metallic devices.
