Co-simulation Framework for Optimal Operation of Pumped Hydro Storage and Wind Power

A power system consisting of more variable renew-able energy sources and interconnections require new operational methods and improved interaction between grid, generation and storage units. This work aims to investigate grid and market integration capabilities of wind power resources to the hydropower dominated power systems in north Norway in areas with poor power transmission capacity. Norway is a strong candidate for offering pumped hydro storage opportunities for excess wind power production. Therefore, a co-simulation framework is developed to optimise the wind-hydro system integration capabilities within the Norwegian context. The framework is based on a multi-objective linear problem solver, supported by a fuzzy decision maker. Further, the work performs a techno-economic analysis of how the grid utilisation and operational patterns varies with different configurations of bilateral production agreements between wind and hydro power producers. Advanced optimisation algorithms are executed to determine the optimal operational boundaries of wind-hydropower joint usage. The transmission system operator’s point of view is also considered in terms of power grid limitations and possible investments. The results indicate that higher prioritising of wind power penetration enhance the grid utilisation and force the hydropower plant to distribute the production more over the season. More wind power used by the pump increases the hydro income and help the hydropower plant to improve the competitiveness in the future flexibility market.
