Method to Create Virtual Mock-Ups of Complex Technical Objects

In modern industrial computer-aided design virtual reality (VR) serves as a powerful tool for solving a variety of project tasks with the usage of immersion features such as product construction visual analysis, ergonomic metrics, exterior evaluation etc. The products developed often contain large number of mechanical, electronic elements hence the complexity of products leads to the design errors and, as a consequence, increasing of time spent and price. Also, there is no formal approach to the design in VR which could simplify this process. Authors have proposed a method converting formalized components of technical objects to the virtual object model called virtual mock-up. The components are formalized with logical and algebraic description. The method’s key feature is hardware-free property, which means that it is not attached to a certain VR platform and thus allows reducing design errors. Authors have tested it on the concrete technical object, namely measurement device, results are also given in the article.
