Analysis of the Operation of a Gas Turbine Plant When Burning Hydrogen Fuel

In the last decade, environmental challenges have increasingly influenced the energy sector. The development of hydrogen energy will make it possible to minimize the impact on the environment. To introduce hydrogen technologies, it is necessary to transform the existing model of production, distribution and consumption of heat and electric energy. Fuel conversion and combustion are complex processes and, in some cases, not well understood. When the air-fuel mixture burns in the combustion chamber of a gas turbine, combustion products of the fuel gas are formed, which represent a multicomponent gas mixture. This transition to hydrogen technology will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of power generation. The cheaper cost of hydrogen allows it to be used for combustion in energy gas turbines. The complete replacement of natural gas with hydrogen requires the prediction of energy and environmental characteristics. This study makes it possible to evaluate the operation of a gas turbine unit when switching to hydrogen fuel. The GE 6FA engine was selected as the engine under study. Mathematical modeling of the engine was carried out in the “AS GRET” software package (Automated system for gas-dynamic calculations of power turbomachines). Changes in the main energy and environmental characteristics are shown under variable modes in the range of power variation from 23 to 80 MW. The obtained numerical values of NO, NO
