On the Tunability of Mode Locked Laser Diodes for Use as Local Oscillators in Photonic Terahertz Systems

To enable the application of new as well as established measurement techniques in the field of terahertz technology based on monolithically integrated mode-locked laser diodes (MLLDs), the control of several parameters and laser characteristics must be investigated. Therefore, this work shows an in-depth investigation of two similar quantum dot (QD) MLLDs with respect to their repetition rate and repetition rate stability. After determining the best operating points, we show an experiment where both lasers are used for the generation and detection of terahertz signals without a physical link connecting any part of the system.
