I. Introduction
Technological advancements in the design of relay hardware and the development of high-speed peer-to-peer communication protocols have resulted in a new generation of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). An efficient way to apply these devices and design a custom-built automatic bus transfer scheme is to use high-speed peer-to-peer IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging. IEC 61850 uses an Ethernet connection as the medium of communication between the protective relays. This paper highlights the basics of IEC 61850 and the MTM transfer scheme as well as provides insight to the application of a MTM scheme using IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging in an industrial facility.
