A Rule-based Energy Management Scheme for Grid-Integrated PV-Battery-powered EV Charging Station

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming popular with the advancement of technology and environmental concerns. However, EV acceptance is hindered by several challenges, such as affordability and availability of charging stations. In this paper, a grid-connected residential electric vehicle charging station powered by the rooftop photovoltaic solar system and, batteries as a storage system is evaluated and assessed under various scenarios. A rule-based energy management scheme has been proposed to control the power flow among rooftop PV array, an EV, a BESS, and a residential ac load considering their respective state of charge (SOC). The effectiveness and the performance of the proposed Energy Management Scheme (EMS) were assessed under different irradiance and load conditions for an EV charging station (EVCS). The presented scheme is simulated in MATLAB®. Obtained results are finally concluded with explanation and system performance verification.
