Reconfigurable Reflective Polarization Converter MSF for mm Wave 5G Applications

The conducted work focuses on the design of a reconfigurable reflection-based polarization converting metasurface for 5G communication applications (i.e. avoiding indoor/outdoor obstacles and allowing wireless quasi-line of sight path communication). The proposed design consists of an I-shaped resonator linked with two parallel biasing lines and an inverted butterfly shaped structure, integrated with voltage-controlled PIN diodes within the unit cell. The novel approach ensures the provision of electronically controlled, ultra-wide band (UWB) reflective circular polarization in one state and cross-polarization in the other. The reconfigurable MSF operates in K and Ku bands. The simulated results demonstrate that with zero biasing voltage the metasurface presents circular polarization ranging from 19 GHz to 40 GHz. This state can be reconfigured to cross polarization ranging from 30 GHz to 42 GHz through a global switching of the PIN diodes in every cell.
