A Thin Dual-Mesh Transparent Metamaterial Unit cell for Millimeter-Wave 5G Applications

This article presents meshed wire-based transparent metamaterial unit cell for millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. Thin copper wires are used to from meshed conducting ring patches on a 0.254 mm thick Polyimide substrate material in order to obtain transparency. Closely spaced metallic wires are placed in such a way that the structure exhibits negative effective permeability, effective permittivity, and refractive index at the magnetic resonance frequency of 28 GHz with 85% transparency. Nicolson-Ross-Wier (NRW) and direct retrieval methods are used to obtain the metamaterial characteristics. The performance of the metamaterial unit structure is evaluated mainly using scattering parameters, the surface current density and effective dielectric parameters. The performance of the unit cell indicates that it is a suitable candidate for use in next-generation 5G mmWave communication devices.
