Low-Profile Passive Reflector for Radar Detection of Road Markings

This paper introduces the design of a passive reflector which presents a relatively large radar cross-section to forward-looking automotive radars. The reflector’s low-profile configuration facilitates integration into roadway infrastructure by embedding into painted asphalt. Thus, the reflector may be used for detection and identification of road markings in low-visibility weather conditions. The reflector is designed for operation at the 79 GHz automotive radar band, and exhibits a simulated cross-section of -12.7 dBsm at an 85° incidence angle.
