Broadband High Gain Helical Antenna for Satellite Comunication Applications

A wideband helical antenna is developed for GPS satellite communication applications. The proposed antenna constructed from a thick copper conducting wire with diameter of 4 mm and ground plane diameter is 300 mm. The proposed antenna reflection coefficient is matched over a wider bandwidth using dielectric material of an optimized dimensions. The reflection coefficient parameter is less than -10 dB over a band from 1.1 GHz to 1.9 GHz. The antenna is encapsulated inside a radome designed using Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) material. The reflection coefficient and gain parameters of the proposed antenna with and without radome are calculated and compared. Moreover, a parametric study on various types of impedance matching transformer is conducted using multiple electromagnetic simulations. Results indicate the presented antenna exhibit very good performance in terms of impedance matching, coverage, gain and axial ratio over the entire GPS communication range and it is promising for the satellite communication systems.
