A Miniaturized Implantable Antenna for ISM band Biomedical Application

In this paper, an implantable antenna with two co-centric rectangular complementary split-ring elements with slots added between the rings are proposed. The slots, on the other hand, are utilized to fine-tune the frequency. This antenna design works at 2.4 GHz ISM band. Moreover, a shorting pin is used between the radiating patch and the ground plane of the antenna to lower the resonant frequency. In comparison to other current antennas, this one can work in all areas of the human body, as simulated by various body phantoms. It can even be operated with high input power due its lower specific absorption rate (SAR). The presented antenna is compact and has good radiation properties. Implantable antennas in other frequency bands can also be designed using the proposed antenna method.
