Planar and Compact Ferrite Isolator in Ku- band

This paper presents the design and fabrication of a compact, planar ferrite isolator in Ku-band. A completely filled Rectangular Wave Guide (RWG) isolator using an inset-fed micro strip transmission line is demonstrated. Size of the isolator is ~ 9mm x 9mm x 0.5mm (length x width x thickness).Method of feeding has considerably reduced the size of the isolator. The bias is applied transverse to the ferrite substrate. Isolation band from 16 GHz to 18.8 GHz is obtained. A maximum peak Isolation of around 40 dB is measured at 18.6 GHz. The device along with bias mechanism weights less than 20 gms. All the measurements are verified by simulations using a full wave 3D-electromagnetic solver. (CST MicroWave Studio(CST MWS)).
