An Approach to Estimate the Instability and Growth Trends of Mango Crop Area by Using the Optical Satellite Images

The present study estimated mango (Mangifera Indica L.) crop area in two major mango producing districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP) State of India viz., Lucknow and Meerut by using Landsat 8 OLI satellite images. Satellite images covering both districts are classified for mango crop by using knowledge based decision tree classifier (DTC) and acreage is estimated by using DTC classified images. Furthermore, the mango crop area estimated by satellite images is further used to estimate the coefficient of variance (CV) and compound growth rates (CGR) in order to determine the instability and growth rate of area and production of mango crop of Lucknow and Meerut districts of Uttar Pradesh State covering the period from 2013–14 to 2020–21. The result revealed that the Meerut district recorded the highest instability of 6.39% and growth rate of 2.59% in the mango fruit crop area during 8 years period (i.e. 2013–14 to 2020–21). In future, this study may be extended to all main mango crop growing districts of the Uttar Pradesh, which will be useful for policymakers and the government in expansion planning of mango crop area.
