HLS and CCNx Based High-Quality Live Streaming on On-Premises Network System

Owing to demand for online meeting systems, high-quality video streaming has been becoming more and more indispensable. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective on-premises network system that provides high-quality online learning environments to a large number of students. The proposed system combines emerging Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and prevailing HTTP live streaming (HLS). We designed and implemented the proposed on-premises network system through an HLS-CCNx translator that converts HLS to CCNx protocol messages defined by IRTF RFC and an extension of open-source software for CCNx communications. We conducted experiments in an online classroom at a college. Experiment results show that the proposed method can reduce the traffic load by approximately 89% compared to HLS by leveraging the benefits of CCN, that is, multicast and in-network caching. A questionnaire survey of the students was also conducted, and 77% of the students stated that they would like to use the system in the future.
