Small-Scale DC PETT Module Prototype for the Novel 25kV MVDC Electric Railway System

The Medium voltage DC Electric Railway System (MVDC-ERS) is a new concept in the last years, which is more and more explored as an innovation in the railway industry. This paper presents full-scale simulation prototypes and small-scale experimental module prototype for Power Electronic Traction Transformer (PETT) system of the smart 25kV MVDC railway network proposed by the Flexible MVDC-ERS project. Two different topologies are explored as suitable candidates for MVDC traction systems. Simulations for the full-scale model (25kV-1.5/3kV, 8 modules, 1.2MW) covers various input line voltage variations and load steps. The results obtained from the experimental measurements of the two converter boards are also compared with their small-scale simulation model (400V-50V, 1kW). Both topologies can be successfully used in MVDC traction systems for the novel smart railway electrification.
