Developing an Index to Support Fast Voltage Recovery Under Post-Fault Scenario in an Industrial Microgrid

Microgrids are growing rapidly as a potential mode of operation for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integrated distribution systems. DER integration, along with large motor loads in industrial microgrids have raised many technical difficulties including delayed voltage recovery in the post-fault scenarios. The inclusion of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in microgrids may help to overcome such adversities. In this paper, a methodology for the placement of BESS has been proposed with the formulation of a new Voltage Recovery Index (VRI). IEEE-43 bus industrial test system has been chosen to validate the proposed methodology. Results show the effectiveness of the VRI-based placement of BESS with the lowest rating for providing reactive power after a fault event. Simulations are carried out under various operation scenarios to ensure the robustness of the proposed methodology.
