Node Breaker Model Based Transient Stability Simulations Using Sparse Tableau Approach

This paper investigates the applicability of the sparse tableau approach (STA) for node breaker modelling in time domain simulations for power stability analysis. Power system transient stability studies are routinely used by planners and operators to analyze the system stability following a contingency. The electrical network equations are usually formulated using the bus-branch models in the stability simulations, which fail to represent the circuit breaker operations. STA allows modelling of detailed station configurations and results in a highly sparse matrix compared to $Y_{\mathrm{B}\mathrm{U}\mathrm{S}}$ matrix. Creation of faults and breaker status changes are accommodated using compensation methods to reduce the number of re-factorizations. WECC 3 generator 9 bus system is populated with one and half breaker configurations to demonstrate the performance of the STA method under load shedding and stuck breaker scenarios.
