Single-ended time-domain line fault location method considering shunt capacitance

This paper proposes an improved model-based single-ended time-domain fault location method on AC transmission lines. The proposed method only requires the instantaneous voltage and current measurements at the local end, and does not need any remote side information such as voltages, currents, equivalent source voltages or impedances. Compared to the existing single-ended time domain model-based method, the proposed method considers the shunt capacitance through the line by establishing lumped RLC line model. In addition, a low pass filter is applied to the measurements to improve the modeling accuracy of the lumped model. Finally, numerical integration methods are applied to convert differential equations into algebraic equations, and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is adopted to solve the highly nonlinear fault location problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through many case studies in PSCAD/EMTDC, with different fault types, locations and resistances. The method only requires a short data window within half a cycle (10 ms) and a relatively low sampling rate of 10kHz.
