Focusing on the Effects of Longitudinal Heat Exchange on Electric Field and Temperature Distribution in HVDC Cable

This paper aims at the investigation of the effect of longitudinal heat exchange on the temperature and field distributions in HVDC cables and joints. Two configurations are considered in this paper, joint-cable interface and cable partially laid in a tunnel. The results show a localized increment in the conductor’s temperature which gives rise to a longitudinal temperature gradient in both configurations. Such longitudinal gradient has important implications on the one hand for the correct design of the cable joint, and on the other hand for singling out potentially critical hot spots whenever the laying conditions are changed along the cable route.
