Matrix Pencil Method Based Oscillation Monitoring - A Case Study in 240-Bus WECC Test System

In an Indian power grid, the occurrence of a low-frequency oscillation is a challenging problem for power system operators. Low-frequency oscillations limit the power transfer capability and deteriorate power system security due to low-damped or sustained oscillations. Among the modal analysis methods for power system oscillation monitoring, the matrix pencil method has shown promising results for identifying oscillation modes. This paper analyzes the matrix pencil method's performance for monitoring oscillations using the PMU data for the 240-bus Western Electricity Coordinating Council test system. The matrix pencil method accurately detects and estimates the characteristics of sustained oscillation for simulated cases on the 240-bus model. The method accurately identifies the dominant mode of oscillation, assisting operators in taking corrective actions for preventing any impending instability issue.
