Design of a Digitally Controlled Two-Phase Interleaved DC-DC Boost Converter for DC Microgrid

The need for renewable energy sources is increasing everywhere to meet the energy demand and to achieve carbon-neutral power generation in the long run. Micro-grids have paved the way for electrification work in several areas where the construction of the utility grid is impracticable from the economic point of view. It seems preferable at this juncture to use DC systems over traditional AC systems for micro-grids. In this work, a novel digitally controlled 2-phase interleaved High Voltage (HV) DC-DC boost converter has been designed in MATLAB 2019 (Simulink) for the DC micro-grid. The hardware setup has been developed and the same specifications have been used to simulate the proposed system for a DC bus voltage of 400V. It is established that the proposed converter has improved transient characteristics and lesser cost in comparison to a conventional boost converter of similar ratings. Hence the proposed device can be used for medium power applications for better power quality and reduced cost.
