OpenCL-Based Design of an FPGA Accelerator for H.266/VVC Transform and Quantization

Versatile Video Coding (VVC) or H.266 is the latest video coding standard that enables higher compression rate compared to the previous standards such as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), while maintaining similar video quality. However such a high compression rate comes with the cost of increased computation complexity. Therefore hardware acceleration is required for real-time encoding and streaming applications. This paper focuses on transform and quantization in Intra-Frame coding which is regarded as one area where the computation complexity has been hugely increased. We propose an FPGA-based accelerator designed entirely using C-like OpenCL design environment. We implement the architecture on an Intel Stratix 10 FPGA and achieved $6.5 fps \sim 83.3 fps$ processing speed.
