A Novel Wideband Ridge Gap Waveguide Magic Tee for Millimeter-Wave Application

In this article, a novel planar magic tee based on ridge gap waveguide (RGW) technology is proposed. The proposed design consists of a 3 dB hybrid coupler integrated with a 90° phase shifter implemented using a tapered dielectric slab. Each component is designed individually where the overall structure is globally optimized to achieve a deep matching level with minimum phase and amplitude imbalance. The proposed magic tee achieves a 15 dB matching level at all ports over a 29% relative bandwidth at 27 GHz with more than 15 dB isolation. In addition, the proposed magic tee has ±3° phase imbalance with the division of 3 ± 0.7 dB over the operating bandwidth. The proposed structure is simulated using two electromagnetic solvers, where a good agreement between the results is achieved. The proposed magic tee is a good candidate for mm-wave wireless applications including satellite and radar communications.
